Q. I already have music digital distribution through another company.
A. No problem. Chances are whoever you are currently using; they only have you in/on at the most 15 to 20 retail digital channels. These companies concentrate on the largest US retailers like iTunes and all the usual US places. They won’t have your music in anywhere near 600 Global Retail Channels.
Just having your music in 19 digital retail locations limits your placement and restricts your full potential for your “Global” music and content sales.
Plus, think about it… In 5, 10, 15 years are You still going to want to pay your current distribution company’s monthly/yearly reoccurring fee for for your music placement? What if they decide to raise their reoccurring fees in year 6?
Most likely, if you cancel or stop paying your service agreement now or at a future time you will lose your current retail music placement. (Don’t worry, WHO?MAG can place you in these same locations.)
Some content distribution companies also charge you a yearly fee, like a maintenance fee to keep your music, videos, content in those few outlets. Not with WHO?MAG Distribution, there are no reoccurring monthly or yearly fees.
Q. Should I end my current digital distribution agreements and bring my entire music catalog to WHO?MAG Distribution?
A. Although you don’t have to, we think that when you do the Business 101 Math, and consider how many more placements for your music WHO?MAG will provide, You will really want to!
*You can’t have two (2) distributors for the same Single, CD or Content. The digital retail outlets will be confused as to who to pay.
It comes down to simple math. How much is it going to cost you? You have to take your music where people are buying music. People are buying music in more than the 15 to 30 places that most distributors place your music. People are buying music on more than US music sites.
Here’s the math: Factor in your current distribution split multiplied by the number of sales you made, then subtract your monthly or yearly distribution fees and you will see your split is not what you think. If you calculate the math out 5, 10, 15, 20 years down the road with your music, you will see how you can lose money over time. Think time won’t catch you? Ask some of the artists who didn’t protect their music career investment for the long term.
Q. I am with CD Baby and I only paid $35.00 setup and they take 9% on my net. Why would I switch?
A. CD Baby is an excellent service for what they do. If you are OK with being in 15 to 20 US digital retail outlets then CD Baby might be for you.
You also have to consider how much music you’re going to sell. There’s a link below to an online comparison between CD Baby and Tunecore. It says that if you’re planning to sell less than 370 downloads you might choose CD Baby, however it went on to say, if you’re planning on selling more than 370 downloads then Tunecore was better.
When you do the math for both CD Baby and Tunecore compared to the exposure and placements that WHO?MAG Distribution provides, you truly understand that there are no limits placed on your sales. Here’s that link:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/indie/cd-baby-vs-tunecore
In reference to CD Baby’s 9%, when you add what the retail outlets charge and add CD Baby’s 9% back in you will see you’re closer to 37% of gross. Don’t let gross and net fool you.
BTW: When you consider Tunecore’s $20 per year per CD multiplied by the number of CD’s you have with them multiplied by 5 years and you begin to see the numbers. REVERBNATION charges $34.95 – 59.95 per year. Each release with them requires another subscription. Just do the math.
Q. What are the WHO?MAG Distribution Percentage Splits?
A. 65/35 This is figured on the gross and includes the fees that the retailers take as well. If we were to price like CD Baby we could say 7% net.
Plus, there are No Monthly or Yearly reoccurring fees, just our onetime fee per project. If you factor in your current distribution split multiplied by the number of sales you made, then subtract your monthly or yearly distribution fees and you will see your current split is not what you think. Depending on your agreement, you are really closer to a conservative 45/55 split with you being on the short side of the ratio.
So, in year 4 your Single, CD, Song, Video is not selling as much, are you willing to keep paying $20+ per year per CD for the “opportunity” to make a sale?
Q. How much is this WHO?MAG Digital Distribution going to cost me?
A. The better question is… How much is this going to cost me, if I don’t sign up? Currently WHO?MAG Distribution charges a $100 set up fee on your first project. Each additional project is only $50. This price is per project for a single, EP or CD (full album). (Our Music Video, Video Content, Film and TV Distribution is priced differently.)
When you think about it, on your first project with WHO?MAG Distribution, your cost is roughly .17 cents per retail outlet where we place your music/content. On your second and subsequent projects that turns out to be around .085 cents per retail outlet. When you consider your time, we don’t think that you can find anyone to do it for less.
Q. How much will it cost if I want to bring my entire music catalog to WHO?MAG Distribution?
A. Currently, you pay $100 for your first CD, EP or Single, your second and beyond are only $50 per project as mentioned above. If you have a catalog and want to bring your entire catalog, WHO?MAG Distribution will place up to 10 CD’s or Singles for the price of 3 or only $200. You must place your entire catalog, up to 10, at the same time.
Q. How often do I get paid? How do I get paid?
A. Once per calendar quarter. We have a minimum check payment of $25.00 before we disburse funds. Any earnings not paid one quarter, carries over to the next quarter until you accrue $25.00. We will issue a check to the name and address that you provide. At this time electronic payment is not available, however this could change in the near future.
Q. Does WHO?MAG report to Soundscan?
A. Yes
Q. How will I know what I sold?
A. Each billing statement will include a complete listing and breakout of your sales, where they came from etc.
Q. How long will it take to get my music in WHO?MAG retail outlets?
A. Certain digital retail outlets will have your music, videos, content up in 7 to 10 days. Other outlets may take up to 30 days. To be safe with your timing, we would rather say 30 to 45 days for all outlets. This is another reason why if you have an upcoming release date, NOW is the time to get started. As you know…Timing is Everything!

Q. What if a Major Record Label like Sony Records or Universal Music wants to sign me and they want me to cease all digital distribution?
A. In this day and age, you have a better chance to win the Lottery than get a major label to sign you; however yes, we can remove your music/video/content out of our retail outlets. Some of our retailers charge us fees to remove music before 3 years. If you make this request in the first year of placement, we pass all of our retail outlet’s fees on to you. The fees total $375. After the first year, the remove fees drop to $29.95. After the third (3rd) year, there are no fees.
Q. What about my Mixtape?
A. What’s your definition of a Mixtape? Currently we are only working with artists, music and content creators who are working with their own original material. If your mixtape is all your own material or sample cleared, then yes we can help you. If your mixtape is more of a collaboration of other people’s music and you don’t have rights or clearances, then we can’t help you at this time. All samples used must be cleared and you must sign to that effect.
Q. Can I pass my earnings to my heirs?
A. Absolutely! And when you think about it, WHO?MAG Distribution’s no recurring monthly/yearly fees really make sense long term for passing your distribution earnings down to your heirs. Why pass down to your heirs your current recurring service fees?
Q. Why does WHO?MAG Distribution need a physical CD from me?
A. We have to verify that you in fact do have a real project. Our International outlets also want to see your artwork, Believe it Or Not!
Q. When you say content, what do you mean?
A. What we call content today will only grow over time. We are calling content anything non musical oriented. The Content still has to be original material and any music or samples used would need clearances also. Content includes but is not limited to comedy, spoken word, audio books, audio documentaries etc. Search iTunes for non musical categories to determine if there’s a market for your content.
