Iconic pop and RB singer Whitney Houston was found dead at a hotel in Beverly Hills yesterday (February 11) at the age of 48. Details are still developing as to what may have happened to the beloved star, but it has been confirmed that the woman found in the hotel is Houston. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. (6:55 p.m. ET) at the Beverly Hilton hotel despite resuscitation efforts, a police spokesman said.

Despite initial reports that her body was discovered by entertainer Ray J, whom Houston had a long-standing friendship with, it was later revealed that her body had been found by a bodyguard. Houston’s mentor Clive Davis, held his annual pre-Grammy party in the same Beverly Hilton were Houston’s body was found only a few hours after the story broke.

“I’m sure the whole show will be a tribute to her,” musician Paul Shaffer said about the Grammys, which take place later today (February 12.) “Here is music’s happiest night combined with such a sad note. You got to be some kind of philosopher to make some kind of sense out of this. I certainly can’t.”

Whitney Houston emerged in the mid-80s as a fresh-faced star with a powerhouse voice. Her gorgeous looks and remarkable talent made her a perfect fit for the MTV-obsessed 1980s, and on the strength of hits like “Saving All My Love,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “How Will I Know,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “The Greatest Love of All” and more she became one of the biggest stars of the decade. Going into the 1990s, her appeal only broadened, reaching its apex in 1992 with the release of her film and soundtrack The Bodyguard and its massive hit single “I Will Always Love You.” For the majority of the 1990s, Whitney became more of a film star, following The Bodyguard with appearances in Waiting To Exhale and The Preacher’s Wife.

Sadly, her musical career began to become overshadowed by a seemingly constant flow of tabloid fodder. Houston and her former husband, RB star Bobby Brown, became fixtures on gossip pages for drug abuse problems and legal issues. They had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and in the early 2000s filmed a reality show called “Being Bobby Brown” before they eventually split in 2007.

Despite the controversies of the last few years, Houston seemed poised for a comeback. She released I Look To You in 2009 and had garnered a substantial role in an upcoming remake of the 1976 film Sparkle.

Sadly, Houston didn’t live to see the film’s release or to fully revitalized her career. Nonetheless, she will be remembered for being one of the towering talents of her and any other generation, and as arguably the greatest voice in pop music over the last thirty years. An influence for every generation that has come after, Whitney Houston’s legacy will always be her remarkable voice and a career that places her at the head of the class with the legends of pop music.
